4 Ways to Celebrate National Seniors Day with Your Loved One

By Nancy Delwaide, 9:00 am on

National Seniors Day is coming on October 1st, and there are plenty of fun ways you can celebrate the day with your elderly loved one and show him or her just how much you care. The staff at Home Care Assistance, a leading provider of senior care Oakville, ON, families trust, has a few great suggestions for making this day memorable.

1. Look at Old Photos

Celebrating National Seniors Day is the perfect excuse to take out the photo albums and look through old pictures with your loved one. You may even discover photos and family records you have never seen before. Revisiting old experiences can bring back wonderful memories for your loved one, and he or she will likely be happy you are taking the time to look back on family history while building new memories in the process.

2. Volunteer at a Senior Centre

Volunteering is the perfect way to show seniors how much they are appreciated, which is the general purpose of National Seniors Day. Encourage your loved one to help out at one of the many senior centres in Oakville, even if it’s just for one day. Some of the activities you and your loved one can volunteer to help with include exercise programs and computer classes.

3. Cook an Old Family Recipe

Perhaps there is an old family recipe you and your children love, but you have no idea how to make. National Seniors Day is the perfect time to head into the kitchen with your loved one and learn the recipe from someone who has followed it for many years. Your loved one will likely be excited to teach you, and it will make him or her happy to know you want to pass the recipe down to future generations.

4. Plan a Game Night

Playing games is a great way to stimulate your loved one’s brain while having some fun. You can invite friends and family to help your loved one stay social, and the games can also help preserve his or her memory and prevent diseases such as Alzheimer’s and dementia. Make sure to choose your loved one’s favorite games to reinforce the day is all about showing appreciation for him or her.

While spending time with your loved one on National Seniors Day, you may notice a few of his or her care needs are not being met.
